Turn to homeopathy for fine head of hair problems

August 30, 2007

Vinita Shirodkar was losing hair for six months and was desperate for a cure like maybe a milllion other people in India who lose hair everyday. After all it has been truly said a hair in the head is worth two in the brush.

One of the most dismaying sights one can see is hair on the bathroom floor, in the comb or hair on the pillow, as to most of us hair is associated with good looks, strength and beauty. To some it also has emotional implications with people losing hair, having lowered self-confidence and self esteem, with some even going into major depression.

Hair is actually a mirror of health; Hair fall is often the first sign of ill health. All hair problems are not hereditary. Many medical conditions like hypothyroidism, anaemia, hormonal imbalances, systemic lupus erythematosus, lichen planus etc. are often detected by also looking at the hair loss pattern.

Darshana Shah, a 34- year old, suddenly started noticing increased hair loss for six months. She had tried various home remedies for the problem without much help and her numerous visits to the beauty parlours too were wasted.

When she visited Dr Batra’s clinic she was overly concerned with her hair problem, as the thinning was now becoming visible. As a person who led an active social life, she was naturally worried that it would hamper her social life.

Worse for her, her friends had started noticing the thinning, and people had started to talk about it. After looking into the symptoms it was found that her hair was coarse and dry, he was beginning to put on weight for the last three months and her periods were also getting irregular.

Studying these symptoms, the experts recommended a thyroid test for her and sure enough she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. This was just one of the cases where someone who had a hair problem that was actually diagnosed and treated for a more serious ailment.

The most important thing when treating hair fall is to identify the underlying cause. Home remedies, as seen in Darshana’s case, do not help much, as the root cause of problem is often ignored. Even nutritional supplements do not help correct hair problems, as one needs a more holistic approach to hair loss.

Homeopathic medicines when combined with the latest diagnostic tools in trichology, like Trichoscan can work wonders for a patient. Over a period of time the quantity of hair loss begins to reduce before coming to normal. Homeopathy offers a safe and effective solution for hair problems

Hair loss found to correlate with cardiovascular disease

August 18, 2007

The hair of Oulu resident Harri Rautio began to thin a few years ago, when he was less than 20 years old. The hair loss did not come as a surprise, as his two brothers and his father were also prematurely bald.
“When I went into the army I shaved my head completely, and I have stuck to that. Before going into the army, the hair loss was annoying, but not anymore. I would probably keep shaving my head even if I were growing hair.”
Meanwhile, in her research for her doctoral dissertation, Päivi Hirsso has found that baldness correlates with cardiovascular disease.
“Hair loss is a sign that there is something wrong in the body. It seems to be one clear risk factor in the development of cardiovascular disease.”

Hirsso found a very clear difference in the illness rate among young bald men with large amounts of abdominal fat and those of the same age with large abdomens and a full head of hair.
“Bald and overweight men under the age of 35 were much more likely to have a low-level inflammation than those with normal hair. The inflammation is linked with cardiovascular disease.

Hirsso says that being overweight might accelerate the balding process.
However, she emphasises that intense sports, or exemplary diet will not prevent baldness.
“The tendency to go bald is so strongly hereditary, and dependent on hormonal factors, that there are no ways to prevent it. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile for a bald person to reduce the emergence of later risks through a healthy lifestyle.”

Harri Rautio is not afraid of the health risks linked with balding.
Rautio, who works in a sporting goods shop, plays floorball, tennis, and badminton.
Päivi Hirsso recommends that those who have gone bald should be monitored closely by the age of 50. At about that age, they should also seek to bring their weight down to normal levels.

Hirsso says that for women, slimming down could work as a way to fight hair loss. In women, the loss of hair is clearly linked with abdominal fat and insulin sensitivity.
“Many women come to see doctors to complain about a loss of hair. They should be encouraged to lose weight.

Hair loss also has an impact on men’s social lives. “However, with young men the impact is undoubtedly small, if the man is otherwise slim and muscular”, Hirsso notes.
For her study, Hirsso used a sampling of about 4,000 people nationwide, as well as about 700 men and women in Oulu.

Losing their hair

Although television is filled with shampoo ads extolling the wonders of shine and volume, some women have a more basic concern about their appearance

By MAGEN KRITSCH / Courier & Press staff writer

Every time Gayle Taylor, a minister, took the pulpit, she was terrified her wig would fall off and expose her thinning hair to hundreds of people in her congregation.

Taylor, who lives in Owensboro, Ky., is not alone. According to Lou Robichaud, a hair loss specialist in Evansville, 28 million women in America suffer from hair loss.

And more women are seeking treatment. Dr. Marcia Cave, a physician at Deaconess Women’s Hospital, said about one woman per month seeks her advice and treatment strictly for thinning hair. And other women will come in for an unrelated matter and end up discussing concerns about hair loss.

‘I have seen about 34 patients today, and three or four have talked about hair loss. It is common,’ said Cave.

The most common reasons for hair loss in women are stress, a medical condition, hormones or genes, said Cave.

The two most common age groups experiencing hair loss are women in their early 20s and women who are menopausal, said Cave.

Young women are more likely to experience thinning hair because of stress. The extreme life changes that women in this age group experience — graduating from college, getting married and giving birth — can cause them to begin noticing their thinning hair, she said.

Menopausal women are prone to thinning hair because of hormones and stress.

Because stress is often a factor in thinning hair, when Cave attempts to determine a reason, she asks about any life changes the patient has experienced in the last three to six months.

Cave stressed that most stress-related hair loss is temporary and the hair will usually grow back on its own without any treatment.

Taylor is not so lucky. She was in her early 30s when she began to notice her hair thinning.

She believes her hair loss is hereditary. Although her sisters have not lost their hair, her brothers have.

According to Robichaud, the only way to treat hereditary hair loss is with cosmetic surgery. And over-the-counter treatments do not grow hair back — they simply maintain the hair that a woman has.

Taylor wears a cranial prosthesis, which is hair that has been mounted on a mold and is fitted to the patient’s skull.

Hair transplants for women suffering from hereditary hair loss are becoming more common, said Robichaud.

Cave said proper hair care throughout a woman’s life can go a long way in preventing some types of hair loss. She recommends women eat a balanced diet and avoid too much dyeing and ‘frying’ of their hair.

However, there are few preventable causes to most hair loss, Cave said. She recommends women seek treatment from a dermatologist if their hair loss has been diagnosed as hereditary.

Although women seem to be more private about their hair loss than men, women who notice they are losing their hair usually act fast.

‘It is scary for them,’ said Cave.

‘Usually we get a phone call in the first couple weeks of increased hair loss.’

Some hair loss in women is normal, said Cave. She recommends calling a physician if the hair loss becomes ‘profuse or persistent.’

Since Taylor has experienced hair loss, she gets emotional when young women disregard and mistreat their hair.

‘What I wouldn’t do to have a full head of hair,’ said Taylor. ‘It is hard to explain how a person feels.

Colo. Doctor Offers LASER Treatment For Hair Loss

August 7, 2007

A Colorado doctor is the first in the state to offer a new FDA approved LASER treatment for the tens of millions of men and woman who have hereditary hair loss.

Dr. James Harris said patients go through the treatment for 30 minutes, 44 times over a year. The idea is to use low level LASER light that will stimulate follicles and increase hair growth.

“One of the studies showed that 60 percent of the people grow 20 hairs per centimeter more,” Harris said. “To translate that, that’s almost 100 hairs in a square inch.”

The course of treatment costs about $4,000.

Harris recommends using other treatments along with it. He said there are no known side effects except a little tingling.

Harris added the LASER treatment is non-invasive.

The best candidates are people who still have hair, not people who are already slick bald. It can work for both men and women.

Harris can be contacted at the Hair Sciences Center of Colorado

New Laser Light Treatment Improves Hair Loss

August 2, 2007

August 1, 2007 — Having thick, healthy hair is often a sign of youthful beauty. No one wants to accept the fact that he or she is losing hair, but for the majority of men and a growing number of women, hair loss is a real problem.

Until recently, few treatments offered clinical improvement for hair loss and most of those treatments required prescription medication or a cumbersome application of topical products. Today, a new type of laser technology, called LUCE® Light Therapy, offers an effective, natural alternative to prevent the progression of male and female pattern hair loss. This remarkable treatment is now available at The Skin Center Medical Spas located in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

LUCE® (pronounced LOO-CHAY) Light Therapy involves simply sitting under the low-level laser light for a series of sessions. During each session, which lasts 20 to 30 minutes, a cool, low level infrared light penetrates the scalp and increases blood and lymph circulation at the follicular level to help decrease inflammation and energize the follicular cells. The Luce® Light Therapy has shown to stop hair loss progression in 90 percent of patients and convert 70 percent of hair from the resting phase to the growing phase - the period of time in which hair is typically shed from the hair follicle, to the active growing phase.

“LUCE Light Therapy can be an efficacious treatment for anyone experiencing mild to moderate hair loss,” said Dominic A. Brandy, MD, founding medical director of The Skin Center Medical Spa. “The majority of patients who use LUCE Light Therapy have seen noticeable results with hair re-growth. This unique light stimulates the re-growth of hair by effectively converting hair from the resting phase to the active growing phase. We encourage our hair restoration patients to use the LUCE Light to speed recovery and reduce shedding after surgery.”

LUCE® Light Therapy gives men and women of all ages to opportunity to have fuller, healthier, more youthful-looking hair because it creates the optimal environment for the regeneration of healthy active hair follicles, which produce hair that is thicker, stronger and more lustrous. LUCE® Light Therapy has been used in Europe for over two decades and has shown impressive results in clinical trials in the United States.

The Skin Center Medical Spa specializes in non-invasive and minimally invasive aesthetic treatments, including LipoDissolve™ and SmartLipo™, or laser-assisted liposuction, which effectively diminishes areas of stubborn fat with little downtime.

Board-certified cosmetic and plastic surgeons at The Skin Center Medical Spas perform a wide range of advanced procedures including liposuction, abdominal tucks, breast augmentation, nose contouring, chin augmentation, upper and lower eyelid surgery and the QuickLift™ .

Women’s Hair Loss: A Deep-Rooted Emotional Issue

July 26, 2007

Stress, poor diet, the Pill, HRTs, childbirth, cancer treatment, and menopause are blamed for a national problem that’s ruining the lives of over 40 million women who experience thinning hair and hair loss. It’s a real emotional and beauty issue which is being raised in August as the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) sponsors Hair Loss Awareness Month.

Lifes2good, a leading European natural healthcare company, is generating awareness of a cure for women’s hair loss with its flagship product Nourkrin(TM) — a unique marine-based food supplement that is 100% natural and clinically proven to reverse hair loss. In a survey of 1,000 Nourkrin users, 62.5% saw an improvement in their hair after only two months.

Nourkrin, a decade-old solution for thousands of women in the UK, is now poised to be the natural remedy for all women who suffer from thinning hair and seek alternative and safe forms of treatment besides hair implants, pharmaceutical-based solutions containing minoxidil, laser surgery and other invasive treatments.

“Hair loss is a much bigger issue to women. Up to 60 % of women will lose hair some time in their life, it affects women’s self esteem, and they can become depressed,” says Dr. David Kingsley, the world’s only trichologist (hair/scalp expert) named as a member of the prestigious AAD. He recently authored the book, The Hair Loss Cure: a Self-Help Guide, operates two hair loss clinics in the U.S. and treats thousands of women. He uses Nourkrin(TM) in his therapies with amazing success rates. “Not all hair loss is genetic or permanent. In many cases, hair loss is a temporary issue and will eventually grow back.”

Nourkrin contains: –Marine based extract of proteins and polysaccharides –Silica, an important mineral for reducing hair loss and maintaining strong healthy hair. –Horsetail extract, the organic form of silica that increases the strength of the hair and revitalizes lifeless hair. –IGG Protein aids in the digestion of the product.

Hair Loss Not Always Genetic

July 17, 2007

Q: After each of my surgeries, I have experienced hair loss. Does this come from the use of anesthesia? Is there anything one can do to alleviate the problem?

A: It’s unlikely that the anesthesia had anything to do with your hair loss. What you’re describing sounds like a temporary hair loss problem called “telogen effluvium.” Not all that unusual or uncommon, it’s something totally different from genetic hair loss (androgenic alopecia). Emotional/physical stress from surgery; a sudden life change (e.g.- divorce or childbirth); sudden and marked weight loss; illness (esp. with high fever); depression; and discontinuing birth control medication can all cause the patches of hair loss seen in telogen effluvium.

Here’s how: the average scalp has about 100,000 hairs. Each of these hairs grows from a single hair follicle in a cycle of “life” that lasts anywhere from 3 to 5 years. There are three major stages to this cycle: 1) the “anagen” stage — the stage of active hair growth; 2) the “catagen” stage — the stage where hair growth stops and the follicle rests; and 3) the “telogen” stage — where the hair follicle releases its strand of hair. Roughly 15 percent of hairs are in the telogen stage at any given moment, with a normal daily hair loss of about 100 hairs. When the new hair starts its growth, the old hair is pushed out. A shock to the body may cause many of the hairs in the anagen growth stage to shift into the catagen stage and then into the telogen stage, where they’ll fall out. This process takes about 4 months, so sudden hair loss appears several months after the initial precipitating event. Beyond recovering the particular event, there’s not a whole lot that can be done. I’d recommend lots of good nutrition; a good quality multivitamin/mineral supplement may be helpful. Biotin may enhance hair and nail growth. Make sure that thyroid function, serum iron, and vitamin B12/folate levels are normal. Rest assured that this problem is only temporary. Be gentle when brushing or combing your hair. If hair recovery doesn’t seem to be occurring, or it’s getting worse, see a dermatologist.

Q: I have diverticulitis that comes and goes. I had a colonoscopy this past fall that showed nothing serious. The doctor said as I was leaving, “No seeds.” Why? Could you please tell me which foods I should avoid?

A: Let’s clear up a bit of confusion: Diverticulosis refers to those “nook and crannies” that are tiny finger-like outpocketings ballooning out through the colon’s muscular wall. Some people have none, and others have dozens. Diverticulitis is an infection of one or more of those diverticuli sacs. Diverticuli don’t empty well; stool can get trapped in those sacs and then become infected and inflamed. This causes abdominal pain, typically in the left lower abdomen. Diverticuli usually are present on that side.

When there’s diverticulosis, eating large amounts of fiber and roughage help to keep the pipes clean. In fact, it’s a Western low-fiber diet (low in veggies and fruit) that increases the chances of developing diverticular disease.

It’s been the teaching for years that nuts, popcorn and anything with seeds should be avoided in diverticulosis or diverticulitis. Because obstruction of the diverticular sac is associated with complications, it has been suggested that avoiding foods with seeds or nuts (such as popcorn, pomegranates or strawberries) will reduce the risk of complications. However, a recently released 18 year study of more than 47,000 men done by researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle and a number of Boston hospitals concluded that popcorn, corn, seeds and nuts actually reduce the incidence of diverticulitis (28 percent lower risk in twice-weekly popcorn eaters; 20 percent lower risk in nut eaters) in folks with known diverticulosis. Perhaps they help to “keep the pipes clean”.

However, during an acute bout of diverticulitis infection, it’s probably best to avoid them along with high fiber foods due to the likelihood for roughage to further irritate an inflamed colon lining.
