May 30, 2006

Let’s not kid ourselves — men really do care about the way they look, even if they don’t show it. Here are some solutions to those common problems men don’t want to talk about.

It’s the 21st century, and men are finally coming out of the skin care closet. In fact, men’s skin care is a seven-point-seven billion dollar industry. Whether it’s treating hair loss or eliminating unsightly hairs, men are finally taking pride in how they look. What are the most common problems men face and how can they be fixed?
More than 20-million American men are losing their hair. Who’s to blame?

“It’s starting to permeate into male consciousness that you actually can do things,” said Dr. Weiss. Things that will keep that man in the mirror smiling back. Doctor Weiss is currently studying a new way to stimulate hair growth. He’s testing a device that uses low-energy red light to energize hair follicles. The energized follicles absorb the light, which stimulates them to grow. We’ll be sure to bring you that story when there are results to report!

Normal Hair Growth

May 30, 2006

Normal Hair Growth
The average human scalp has about 100,000 to 150,000 hairs. Blondes have more hair than brunettes (about 140,000 hairs for blondes and 105,000 for brunettes) or redheads (about 90,000).

Hair growth takes place from the root, located in follicles underneath the skin. Each strand of hair grows independently. At any given time, about 90 percent of scalp hairs are in an active growth phase. This phase lasts about two to six years during which an average strand of hair grows about one-half of an inch/month (however, the rate of hair of hair growth slows with age). At the end of the growth phase, the hair enters a resting phase, which lasts about two to three months. When the resting phase ends, the hair falls out and is replaced by a new hair that forms in the same follicle.

Treating Hair Loss

Hair loss can be covered up by using a hair piece or hair weave. When hair loss is caused by a medical condition, cancer treatment or medication, the hair may eventually grow back. There is no cure for androgenetic alopecia, but some treatments are available. A topical solution containing the drug minoxidil (Rogaine®) can be applied to the scalp. The therapy restores some hair growth in 10 to 20 percent of users and slows the rate of hair loss in 90 percent. Minoxidil can be used for both male and female pattern baldness.

Another type of medication for pattern baldness is finasteride (Propecia®). Finasteride is an oral drug that blocks the hormone-associated degradation of the hair follicles. It can only be used in men. About half of men who use finasteride report some degree of hair re-growth.

French hair loss treatment hits shelves

May 5, 2006

French hair loss treatment Alphactif is being launched onto the US market following its success in Europe. The all-natural formula will be available in outlets through the US from April, reports Simon Pitman.

Imported into the country by Hello Imports, which will be the sole distributor, the formula is currently the top selling natural hair loss treatment in Europe, according to manufacturer Laboratoires Natural Scientific.
Launched as two separate product lines - Alphactif for Men and Alphactif Nutritif, which is aimed at both men and women.

Produced in France and Belgium and developed by Gil Mennetrey at the Laboratoires Natural Scientifc, these products claim to be scientifically designed to halt hair loss and rejuvenate hair from the inside out. The manufacturers say that effectiveness has been proven under clinical studies and that there are no known side effects due to the treatments natural ingredient.

Rather than inhibit the hormones that cause hair loss, Alphactif for Men is a dietary supplement containing active vegetable components and vitamins that prevent severe hair loss by supplying the hair follicles with the nutrients necessary for optimal hair growth and protecting them from hormonal or immunological activity and inflammation.

Alphactif for Men is comprised solely of pumpkin seed oil, borage seed oil, urtica dioica root extract, zinc, vitamin B6, Vitamin E and soy lecithin.

Equally as effective and suitable for both men and women, Alphactif Nutritif works on four different levels to stop hair loss, increase hair growth, improve hair strength and protect hair cells with active anti-oxidants.

Containing marine proteins from fish and shark cartilage, sulfur amino acids, eight essential vitamins (A, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, and Biotin) and three important trace elements, zinc, copper and selenium, Alphactif Nutritif is highly effective and without any known side-effects.

The company says that the clinical trials, conducted independently by the Laboratoires Spincontrol in Tours, France, between January and July last year, included 32 men and 32 women who were all suffering from hair loss in a double blind test.

Trichogram testing proved that amounts of anagen phase hair improved in both men and women taking Alphactif for Men and Alphactif Nutritif, while it decreased in the control group. Those taking the products also reported improved hair vitality and strength during the 90 day test.

Both Alphactif for Men and Alphactif Nutritif are priced at $64.99 for 60 tablets.
